Each year, approximately 200,000 Americans are diagnosed with breast cancer. Six to ten percent of these diagnoses are metastatic (Stage 4). Another 30% progress from Stages 0, 1, 2, and 3 to develop into Stage 4. Science has few, if any, answers as to why cancer metastasizes, and we do not currently have an effective treatment to stop metastatic growth. What we do know, is that Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer is not considered survivable—yet.
In the US alone, someone’s mother, wife, sister, or daughter dies from breast cancer every 14 minutes. This number has not decreased significantly in the last 40 years, despite a huge push to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Scientists know that research specifically focused on metastatic breast cancer is crucial to significantly reducing the mortality rate. So, why hasn’t the mortality rate decreased despite increased awareness? Many, including my family, were shocked to learn that metastatic breast cancer receives only about 2-5% of the funds raised for breast cancer research.
Twisted Pink was founded by a breast cancer survivor and is one of the few organizations dedicated exclusively to raising funds and awareness for clinical and translational metastatic breast cancer research. Its mission is simple, yet profound—to “Provide hope and connection to people living with metastatic breast cancer by funding bold breakthroughs in research and awareness of the disease.” Since its inception in 2014, Twisted Pink has been instrumental in raising funds and obtaining grants totaling over $4 million—all of which was specifically dedicated to metastatic breast cancer research and treatment.
On June 10, 2021, Jackie Savoie was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer at the age of 33. At the time of her diagnosis, our daughter Emmy was 2 and our son Parker was 8 months old. During this time, Twisted Pink became a source of support for Jackie—not only through their Box of Hope program—but through the Twisted Pink community. Twisted Pink has over 650 people in their online support group, which offers a platform for those suffering with metastatic breast cancer to connect and share their experiences. Jackie was able to connect with women across the country to share their experiences, diagnoses, and treatment options. Through this community, Jackie became empowered and was able to become a more informed advocate for her own treatment and health.
On October 23, 2023, Jackie passed away, leaving behind a legacy in her children and instilling a spirit of determination and hope. No one should have to endure what Jackie went through, what our children went through, or what our family went through. With the support of TWHS VB Booster Club and our community, the donation made to Twisted Pink in Jackie’s honor, will hopefully fund research that will transition metastatic breast cancer from a terminal diagnosis to a manageable disease with an improved quality of life. And, more importantly, this donation provides hope—hope for people like Jackie, hope for a family like ours, and hope for a family like yours.
